FREE Embracing Change Shawl CAL

“It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.”
 --Charles Darwin
I'm pretty sure that when the year began, we never thought that we'd soon be wiping up a peanut butter jar with disinfectant, homeschooling our kids and working from home by no choice of our own, but hey, we are doing it and, for the most part, championing it!
To celebrate our astonishing resilience and adaptability I've designed the "Embracing Change Shawl" as a FREE Crochet Along event, so we can all take a break and have some well-deserved stitching fun.

The shawl is a crescent shape, all worked in a self-striping yarn to make the color change mindless. Boy, don't we need some easiness in life at this point? I made the sample piece with our Bonita Yarns Chromatic in Delphinium colorway. The pattern also suggests our Merino Dream collection, in case you prefer a wool blend.

To sweeten this moment... June 19 and 20 are party time at the Azulay's home. Both myself and Asher (the boy, the myth, the legend) birthdays! As "party favors" to you, we are offering a 20% OFF SITEWIDE with coupon code: CHANGE20 during checkout.

Save 20% on SITEWIDE during our Embracing Change Shawl CAL launch!

Use coupon code CHANGE20.

Offer excludes clearance and already discounted products. Valid from June 20 through July 20, 2020.

The Design:

The main section is worked sideways and finished with a "Ruffle-as-you-Go" technique where you work them all along without needing extra finishing work (such as tedious weaving in loose ends).

An intermediate crocheter or even a dedicated beginner will be comfortable in making this project. The pattern will include a PHOTO TUTORIAL with many pictures showing the pattern in more details. Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

I hope you enjoy creating this shawl as much as I did! I’d love to see your progress pictures as we start the CAL. If you post your pics on social media with #embracingchangecal or #bonitapatterns. I’ll be lurking all over to check your progress.

Directions Part One

Ch 3,

Row 1: 3 dc in third ch from hook (beg ch-2 does not count as st here and throughout); turn. – (3 dc)

Note: Beginning in Row 2, all stitches are worked in between sts or in between posts to create a smoother texture.

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in first st, dc in next 2 sts; turn. – (4 dc)

Row 3: Ch 2, dc in first st and in each st across; turn. – (4 dc)

Row 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in first st and in each st across; turn. – (5 dc)

Row 5 – Row 64: Rep Row 3 – Row 4 alternately, increasing on every other row. Stitch count on Row 64 should be 35 dc.

Row 65 – Row 95: Rep Row 3 – (35 dc)

Row 96: Ch 2, dc2tog over next two stitches, dc in each st across; turn. – (34 dc)

Row 97: Ch 2, dc in each st across; turn. – (34 dc)

Row 98 – Row 159: Rep Row 96 – Row 97 alternately, decreasing on every other row. Stitch count on Row 159 should be 3 dc.

Row 160: Ch 2, dc3tog over next 3 sts. Do not fasten off to continue ruffled edging on part two.

Pattern Notes:

  • In most layered ruffle patterns, you first need to crochet a flat piece to serve as base for the ruffles, and crochet the ruffles row by row on top of this base. This technique requires fastening off each row of ruffles, which at the end of the project will produce too many ends to weave. The novelty of this design is that it solves the issue of multiple fasten off completely. You will work the ruffles all along without extra finishing work (endless weaving ends!). You’ll first crochet a foundation row of a crochet mesh (ch 2, tr) on the row before the last row worked and follow it by ruffles made on the tr of the mesh throughout
  • Crocheting on a row before last is exactly what it means. For example: If you just finished crocheting row 163 (a row of ruffles) and the instructions for row 164 read: “tr in next ch-2 sp one row before last”… this means that you have to make this tr on the ch-2 sp of row 162 (the row before last row: 163).
  • When crocheting the rows of mesh it helps if you fold ruffles rows down, so you can easily see the stiches from row before last.

Directions Part Two: Edging

With hook size US I (5.50 mm),

Row 161: Working across end-row sps of bottom edge where increases and decreases were made, Ch 4 (count as tr), 3 tr in same end-row sp as beg ch-4, * ch 2, 4 tr in next end-row sp, rep from * across; turn. – (640 tr + 318 ch = 958 sts)

Note: Row 162 is worked in same end-row sps where Row 161 was worked.

Row 162: Ch 4 , tr in first end-row sp, * ch 2, skip next 4 tr, tr in next end-row sp, rep from * across to last end-row sp, ch 2, join with sl st in last tr of Row 161; turn. – (160 tr + 322 ch = 482 sts)

"I couldn't help myself and finished up the second shawl in Chromatic Zinnia. This project is surely a quick one. I could easily finish it up a full shawl in a couple of days or if I were in a rush, I could finish it in one day."

Row 163: Ch 4, 3 tr in same st as beg ch-4, * ch 2, skip next ch-2 sp, 4 tr in next tr, rep from * across; turn. – (640 tr + 318 ch = 958 sts)

Row 164: Ch 4 , tr in first ch-2 sp of one row before last (this is Row 162) * ch 2, tr in next ch-2 sp, rep from * across to last ch-2 sp, (ch 2, tr) twice in last ch-2 sp; turn. – (160 tr + 318 ch = 958 sts)

Row 165: Rep Row 163. Fasten off. – (640 tr + 318 ch = 958 sts)
