The Design:

The cowl is a triangle shape, all worked in a self-striping yarn to make the color change mindlessly. The sample cowl with our Bonita Yarns Chromatic Wool in Over the Rainbow colorway (scroll down to see our yarn selection). The pattern also suggests our Dream Baby yarn (100% acrylic).

The design is worked bottom up and can be easily adapted into a shawl.

An intermediate crocheter will be comfortable making this project. The pattern will include a PHOTO TUTORIAL with many pictures showing the work in more detail. The pattern is written in US crochet terms.

I hope you enjoy creating this cowl as much as I did! I’d love to see your pictures posted on social media. I’ll be lurking all over to check your progress.

Special Stitches Used:

Front Post Long Double Crochet (FPLongDC) – Yo, insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the DC of the previous row, pull up a long loop on hook, (yo, pull through 2 loops on hook) twice.

V-Stitch (V-st) – Work (dc 1, ch1, dc 1) in st indicated.

Finished Measurements: Cowl showcased on the pattern is 26 inches wide by 10 inches long.

Pattern Notes:

1. The cowl is worked from the bottom up. This type of construction gives you freedom to choose a cowl size of your preference. The repeats can also create a medium or large shawl.

2. In short, the “puffy crocodile stitch” is formed by a two-row repeat: a row of V-sts followed by a row of scales (or shells). This is a fairly easy pattern to execute and fast to memorize. The only novelty about this design is that the scales are crocheted in front of the V-sts with clusters of front post long double crochets (FPLongDC) from top to bottom, then from bottom to top, as opposed to working them on top of the row, like in most shell patterns. 3. For those familiar with the Crocodile Stitch I used in other patterns, you will notice that instead of making the scales with front post dcs, this time you will work FPLongDC (see special stitches on page 2) which creates the “puffy” texture. A photo tutorial has been included as a visual aid.

Directions:

Row 1 (WS): Ch 5, DC in 5th ch from hook (counts as V-st; see pic A); turn. – (1 V-st)

Row 2 (RS): Ch 3 (count as a dc), working from top to bottom around post of first dc of first V-st, work 4 FPLongDC (see pic B), turn work so V-st is sideways and post of second dc of V-st is upside down (V point of V-st will be facing right; see pic C), working from bottom to top around post of second dc of Vst, work 5 FPLongDC (see pic D); turn. – (1 scale)

Note: For a shawl, make 24 repeats Rows 6 and 7, and finish with Row 29 for a standard size shawl. Finishing: You will need a toggle button to use as a closure. There is no need for a buttonhole, as you can insert the button through the middle of any scale.
