FREE Crocodile Stitch Hooded Scarf

This hood was designed by my "partner in crime" and mom, Rachel Azulay. It was from her that I learned most of what I know about fashion and designing. One of her main rules of designing is "make it impressive, classic, but above all, easy to make". Oh, and I almost forgot another big one: garments and accessories need to flow, drape.

I can surely see all her golden rules represented on this piece. She used the Crocodile Stitches just in the right places to make it impressive; she made it a hooded scarf (a classic) and finally, she chose a beautiful light weight yarn with a larger hook to make the scarf drapey.

I have been wearing it for a couple of weeks and I have had countless people stopping me to compliment, find out where I bought it and in some cases, people just want to "touch it" to feel how fluffy it is. I confess that I never get tired of the attention our designs get when we wear them "out in the world". If you are a crocheter that mostly makes gifts or sell your creations, I highly suggest you start wearing some of what you make in public. It is a very positive experience, I promise!

2 Skeins of Bonita Yarns Angora Cloud (Sport, #2 weight) in Sand Shades colorway; 20% Angora, 20% Wool, 60% Acrylic (601 yards/ 500 m, 100 grams per skein). You can purchase this yarn at www.bonitapatterns.com

Special Stitches Used:

Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) – Yo and insert hook from the front to the back around the post of the dc of previous row. Complete as for a regular dc stitch.

V-Stitch (V-st) – Work (dc 1, ch1, dc 1) in st indicated.

Pattern Notes:

The Crocodile Hooded Scarf is worked in four pieces (hood, scarf and two pockets) that are sewn together in the finishing stages. Hood is crocheted as a rectangular piece that will be folded and sewn closed on the back edge.
In short, the “crocodile stitch” is formed by a two-row repeat: a row of V-sts followed by a row of scales (or shells). This is a fairly easy pattern to execute and fast to memorize. The only novelty about this design is that the scales are crocheted in front of the V-sts with clusters of front post double crochets (fpdcs) from top to bottom, then from bottom to top, as opposed to working them on top of the row, like in most shell patterns.

Finishing:

Weave in all yarn ends. With wrong side of work facing you, fold hood in half lengthwise and sew along foundation chain edge (opposite edge from the scales). Fold scarf in half and match hood to it and sew them together.

Sew on pockets to each side of scarf short edge as shown in the picture below.
