Free Puffy Heart Pattern

This versatile crochet pattern is so cute and so fast you’ll be able to hook it up in just a few minutes. This can be made as a lariat but don’t stop there. You can use this to make a cute wall decoration for Valentine’s day, add an extra special touch to gift wrapping, or add it to another handmade garment. This is one of the quickest and best stash busting patterns you’ll ever come across. Pattern is listed below.

Materials:
This project can be worked in any yarn weight. Gauge is not crucial. Crochet hook size of your preference.  Heart showcased in pattern was made with:

• Red Heart Soft in Wine; 100% acrylic (256 yards/234 m per skein)
• Size US G (4.00 mm) hook

Pattern Notes:
1. The hearts in the lariat are worked by pulling up loops to the height of what would be a regular double crochet (DC) similar to working a Puff stitch.

Directions for Lariat:

Ch 4, join with SL ST in first CH to form a ring.

Rnd 1: * CH 3, YO, insert hook into ring, YO, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of beg CH-3 (about 1 inch long, 3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops, [YO, insert hook into ring, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of last ST (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops] 9 times, CH 2, [YO, insert hook into ring, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of last ST (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops] 10 times, CH 3, SL ST into ring, CH 16 (this is the chain between hearts + the beginning CH ring for the next heart), join with SL ST in 4th CH from hook; rep from * as many times as you wish to achieve the lariat size of your preference ending with a heart.

Directions for Applique:

Ch 4, join with SL ST in first CH to form a ring.

Rnd 1: CH 3, YO, insert hook into ring, YO, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of beg CH-3 (about 1 inch long, 3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops, [YO, insert hook into ring, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of last ST (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops] 9 times, CH 2, [YO, insert hook into ring, pull through and bring yarn up to the height of last ST (3 loops on hook), YO, pull through all loops] 10 times, CH 3, SL ST into ring; fasten off.

TIP:
You can customize (size up or down) the puffy heart by just adding or subtracting the beginning chain on Rnd 1. For instance, instead of starting with a CH-3, you can increase to CH-4 or as many chains you wish, and just pull up the loop to the height of the CH-4 or as many chains you wish. Work the remaining pattern as directed.
